What is ORCID?

ORCID stands for "Open Researcher and Contributer IDentifier; a short video explains the ORCID ID purpose and use.

Answer

The ORCID ID is a unique number that distinguishes authors from each other and is especially useful to reduce confusion with similar names.  It may be used when submitting manuscripts and applying for grants to ensure you get credit for your work.  The same number remains with you for a lifetime, no matter how many times you switch jobs or institutions.  It may also be linked with other research identifiers.  Registration is free.
