How Do I Use Medline Ultimate (EBSCO)?

Answer

All About

MEDLINE is the National Library of Medicine’s bibliographic database/article index that contains over 27 million references to journal articles. Over 5200 journals worldwide in over 37 languages are indexed. Covered are basic biomedical research and the clinical sciences, including clinical medicine, public health, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, allied health and pre-clinical sciences as well as life sciences that are important to practitioners and researchers – biology, environmental science, biophysics, chemistry and plant & animal science. EBSCO provides a search interface for MEDLINE that is optimized for more complex literature reviews.

How to search by keyword

Screen Image-Medline Ultimate search by keyword

  1. The first time that you sign into Ebsco, you will be asked to link your Ebsco personal account to your OpenAthens/SSO/Banner Health account. You must agree to go forward. You will only need to link the accounts once. After this initial link, the Ebsco Sign in will be directly linked to your Banner Health login.
  2. Just start typing in the box. As you type in the box, the system will autosuggest words. These words are suggested based on historical user input and not medical subject headings (MeSH 2025). We'll get into subject headings in the next section.
  3. Choose a Boolean operator
  4. Add another keyword and click SEARCH
  5. Save individual articles to a Project or Save an entire search to review or share later.
  6. Recent activity is your search history from the current Medline Ultimate session and will be deleted when the browser window is closed.
  7. Search by medical subject headings (MeSH 2025)

How to search by MeSH, Subheadings and Filters

Screen Image: How to search my Mesh topic

  1. Click MEDLINE - MeSH 2025
  2. Type the keyword of interest and hit enter or the search icon.
  3. The system will generate a list of potential matches to the keyword. Choose the term or terms that match. If you are uncertain what a term means, the definition is listed below the term.
  4. Select as many subheadings as you wish or chose none. Subheadings can help focus the search results however in some cases there may not be a lot of content and conducting the search without a subheading may be better. Try either method, you can always return to the results in Recent Activity.
  5. Add to search, add the term and subheading to the search. The MeSH is added to the top search box. Optionally, you can click SEARCH and run it from here to see the results or add additional filters.
  6. After you have added the MeSH to the search, then use Filters to narrow down by article type, publication date, gender, age, language, etc.
  7. Use Filters to narrow down the search results.
  8. Once you have the MeSH term and subheading, Add to search, then add the filters and either scroll to the bottom of the screen to Search or use the Search button above.
